Topic 2.2.2b: Developing a synthetic mapping of discourses on stimuli, barriers and hurdles of SSH impact generation (WP2)

By |

Host institution: University of Tampere, Research Center for Knowledge, Science, Technology and Innovation (TaSTI)

Objectives: Closely with the WG2 co-ordinators a grantee is expected to produce evidence base for the policy development work supporting the main objective of WG2 in developing policy recommendations for improving the relevance and societal impact from Social Sciences and Humanities research. The work consists of analysing the ca. 65 questionnaires on impact generation from 17 European countries. A candidate produces a synthetic mapping of discourses on stimuli, barriers and hurdles of SSH impact generation and ensures its cognateness with earlier research.

Results: One or more publications co-authored by Paul Benneworth, Julia Olmos Peñuela and Reetta Muhonen.

Special criteria for this STSM: preferably the applicant has to be familiar with science, research and innovation (policy) studies or has experience in generating impact.

Topic 2.2. 1: Scholars’ perceptions of research quality and notions of quality (WP1)

By |

Host institution: Université Paris-Est Créteil, Institut de Recherche en Gestion

Description of the topic: Within WG1 sub-group 4 “notions of quality”, qualitative interviews will be conducted on how experienced researchers perceive what makes research excellent work. This STSM serves to prepare the qualitative interviews that will be fielded in different countries. By analysing pre-test interviews and comparing them across countries, a framework will be developed for conducting qualitative interviews to investigate notions of quality.

Objectives: The STSM would contribute to the following objectives of the Action:

  • To observe what kind of scientific and societal interactions characterize SSH disciplines in general, and some in particular.
  • To understand and explain patterns of dissemination in the SSH, through confrontation of information stored in national databases and field interviews.

Special criteria for this STSM: the applicant has knowledge of the organisation of SSH research in his or her country and thus be able to identify all SSH scholars working at (all or a selection of) the universities in his or her country.

Results: The proposed STSM will contribute to the Training school, co-authored publications and to recommendations for better adapted criteria and indicators for SSH research.

Practical details:

Working group: WG1 (conceptual frameworks for SSH research evaluation)

Duration: between two weeks and two months (between August and October)

Location: Université Paris-Est Créteil, Paris, France

Topic 2.1:Examination of various types of SSH research impacts, stakeholders, knowledge and processes of impact generation (WP2)

By |

Host institution: Universitat Politècnica de València, INGENIO (CSIC-UPV)

Objectives: In line with the objectives of WP2 and using some of the cases collected, the grantee will:

  • Examine the various types of SSH research impacts and stakeholders, especially in the cultural sphere;
  • Analyse the types of knowledge use (conceptual/symbolic, instrumental);
  • Identify the processes through which they emerge, and their territorial scope (local, national, international).

The work will be carried out in close cooperation with Julia Olmos Peñuela (University of Valencia), Vice Chair of WG2.

Results: One or more publications thematising structural requirements and conditions favouring the flowing of SSH knowledge towards society as large and measures to value better SSH outcomes.

Special criteria for this STSM: preferably the applicant has to be familiar with science, research and innovation (policy) studies or has experience in generating impact.

Topic 2.3.1: Identification of differences in SSH publication patterns (WP3)

By |

Host institution: Nordic Institute for Studies in Innovation, Research and Education (NIFU) Objectives: This STSM aims to advance the present understanding of differences in SSH publication patterns across COST countries where a national database is established. It is envisioned to achieve this aim by conducting a cross-country comparison of SSH research outcomes using basic SSH indicators (e.g., the share of monographs, the share of non-English publications). Activities will include:

  • Analysis of data collected during the European survey with basic indicators “Cross-country differences in social sciences and humanities publishing patterns”.
  • Development of methodology for bibliometric cross-country comparisons of SSH research using national data.

Results: One or more publications as well as establishment of new collaboration(s) (or development of the existing ones) between NIFU and the STSM applicant’s organisation.

Special criteria for this STSM: preferably the applicant has access to and is familiar with the data infrastructure in their own country or region.

Objectives: The STSM contributes to the WG3 goal of setting up a pilot study for interoperating at least 2 research information systems via VIRTA Finnish platform, and hence to task 4 of WG3 (“Design a roadmap for a European bibliometric database”). The STSM will contribute to the European VIRTA pilot aiming at the development of a European database of research information. Activities include:

  • Analysis on publication data quality in the VIRTA pilot.
  • Bibliometric analysis: A comparison of pilot organizations, for example in terms of co-publishing, publication types, or internationality.

Results: A paper on multilateral comparisons between countries.
